through picture windows

Gregory Geiger creates gauzey and rich photographs made with exacting precision. Driven by the catalogs of Brigman, Atget, Cameron, and Stieglitz, Geiger explores the place of pictorialism—reframed and converted by the tools of media—in our contemporary society. In an environment where a disproportionate amount of how we view our world comes to us through varied forms of digital screens, we are caught in an endless self-replicating loop of media eating media, all for generating clicks, likes, and clawing one's way to those few '15 minutes of fame' we were promised. Where what one thinks and how we see things are tuned and changed by these windows, our tastes dulled and algorithmically directed down ouroboros trails to bleaker days.

"Through Picture Windows" is a labor-intensive fabrication of digital ephemera, ebbing and flowing in, through, and around analog material spaces. These photographs lean into the ethos of traditional pictorialism, making something wholly new. Viewers subconsciously build their own narrative within the frame, gathering up all the pop-media and nostalgia that brought them here to this moment. The story comes into sharper focus. We recognize something familiar and what one can not quite place a finger upon. This is an invitation to collaborate and make an experience of their own, over and over again.
